I have been reading a book lately Making a Living Without a Job: Winning Ways For Creating Work That You Love and it has been incredibly inspiring. I am not quite finished yet, but as far as I can tell it is going to be a great book. There are some BookNotes coming as soon as I finish it, but that’s another story.
Ever the entrepreneur I am always coming up with new ideas, and new businesses. I have always wanted to own my own business, to be self employed. I haven’t been very happy at work lately and I think I have finally realized why, its not my happy place. Real Estate is my happy place. I don’t know exactly what I want to do with the rest of my life but for the foreseeable future I want to work with Real Estate.
Lauren has been with a Real Estate Investment firm, Ascendance Partners, that focuses on the south side of Chicago and has been photographing their rehabbing efforts for the company to use within their marketing material.
We decided that adding real estate photography to our list of services would be an excellent combination of passions and skills, as well as a great way to expand creatively and financially away from relying on a salaried income.
Sometimes I think its the prospect of planning a new venture that excites me more than actually launching it. I absolutely love, learning about something new, and as usual I have already spent countless hours researching every facet of real estate photography. The best resource being Photography For Real Estate a very nicely put together website with tons of information and a very active set of followers. I am sure I will be using it as a resource time and time again.
Lauren and I placed our first ad online to promote our Professional Real Estate Photography services Friday night, and have yet to get any bites, but, we are not giving up yet. To be honest I didn’t expect a whole lot, Craigslist is not the hotbed of activity for finding and hiring dependable real estate professionals. Ideally we will eventually hook up with a brokerage or a number of real estate agents and start shooting all of their listings.
Hopefully we will have a nice little business humming along in no time. Anyone need a Real Estate Photographer in Chicago?

I don’t know anyone who needs the service in Chicago, but you might get a kick out of how not to do real estate photography on the amusing It’s Lovely! I’ll Take It! blog of unfortunate real estate pictures.
Beautiful Photography! Good Luck!
Thanks Gene! I just took a look through the site, It might be one of my new favorites… certainly I will take some notes on what not to do!
Real estate photography is tough. Usually people want it done fast, cheaply, and it takes a good wide angle lens and potentially some lights. There is a market for it, but it is very competitive.
Hey Corey, I have looked to your blog for inspiration for quite some time. Thanks for dropping by!
It’s a sad fact but true. It seems as though many look at real estate photography as a commodity, which is quite unfortunate when considering the current state of the economy where the difference between a sale and someone passing you by is in the quality of the first impression. Most often through the use of photography.
Hey Kirk - I too had looked into doing it, but after a couple of experiments into it, I realized it wasn’t for me. It takes a lot of talent and patience to represent the rooms well, and I’m not a patient person. Oh, and I’d hate to feel rushed by some homeowner/agent.
However I do love your pictures of urban decay. Reminds me to get out more and get more pictures of the same. Keep posting more decay pics please!!!
Corey, You are in luck, we are heading back out tomorrow morning, to catch the second stage of this rehab. I’ll make sure to post them for ya.
How do real estate photographers usually price? How do you price? Thanks!
