I drove around for about 3 hours today. I started in the Far west and much abused Humbodlt Park Area… Heading east I drove through the Up and coming Hip new Wicker Park and then North through Logan Square. Drove through the ghetto, drove past million dollar loft apartments, drove past boarded up churches, children playing basketball in the street, crack heads, business men, grandmothers, african americans, latinos, whites, puerto ricans, asians, I drove past just about every single type of person place and thing I could imagine. All of this in about 4 square miles.
I was trying to explore parts of Chicago I have not seen. I was looking for a place to live, a place to invest in. I have heard all about Chicago’s incredibly diverse neighbor hoods and I wanted to see them with my own eyes. It was incredible how quickly the landscape can change. Million dollar houses literally standing right next door to a boarded up abandon house. Brand new modernist construction with top of the line appliances wood floors, and every single amenity todays fortunate could ever want, right next to 100 year old greystone block architecture engulfed in 75 years of Ivy from the neglect and lack of a caring resident. There were happy houses and sad houses, everything in between. Families chatting on their porches, the industrious Lemonade stands, street side vendors and back-street basketball games, drug deals and gangs… there was a extreme diversity in every aspect of it.
