I recently got hooked on Google Earth. I knew of it’s existence for quite some time. But as always it did not come out for the Mac community for quite some time. Hajo was playing with it this past weekend, and I decided to check it out, to see if it had been ported to to OSX and to my surprise it had been (January).
It is quite an amazing program. It is like a GPS unit on steroids and better than a map. Other than just getting road information and domestic/international boarders you can actually see visible landmarks. The software also has a host of 3rd party software and plugins To explore and gain information about roads, parks, churchs airports hotel and accommodations pretty much anything you could be interested in. Not only is it useful its quite fun to play around with as well.
The program has some very amazing potential to pair with handheld, or marine gps units. If you could load your way points into this using some software, not only can you have a visual trail map on top of your nautical charts, you would have an archive of your journey, in which you could then pair with your travel log. So not only would it be piratical in navigating, but it would be a fun way to log your travels for friends and family as I have been doing. I have been going through, marking off all the places Ive been here in Australia, and places I want to see, Sequin in the mountains of Haiti, my favorite part in Torch lake up north, and the spot that I ended up shaving my head in Key West. Its very cool jogging you memory by physically seeing these places again.
So if you have Google Earth, and you’d like to get some idea of where I am living, and what the place is like over here, send me an email, and I will send you my bookmark files. That way you can actually see the places that I’ve been talking about in my posts. If you would like anymore information on the program and the buzz surrounding it as always take a look at Google Earth Wiki page.
