My Units At QUT (Courses)

Experimental Production

I am really looking forward to this class. It is a production class, that focuses on breaking the rules. Lord knows Im good at that. As much fun as this class sounds it is going to be quite difficult nonetheless. The class consists of a tutorial, in which we will have camera, lighting and basic production excercises, and a lecture in which we will be watching various Avant-Garde and experimental films. In the first class we were set up in groups of 6 and that will be our production crews. Our only production for this course is a 1 min film not a second more or a second less. We will be penalized 10% of our final grade for each consecutive second on either side of the 1 min mark. We are expected to start planning our films, immediately, and we will be critiquing the ideas and things in class with our peers, as well as having sessions with the instructors to talk about our ideas. We will then have one week of production to shoot all 6 films in our group. Each person plans and directs their own film. The others in the group work as the camera operators, lighting, and assistants. After the week of production we will have two weeks post production and the film will be due by the end of the semester. So the emphasis on this course appears to be pre-production. So that you plan out everything to a T and then you have a strict plan to work with so that when the time comes you know exactly what to do. I suppose this is pretty cool, but I am not so sure about having such strict time limitations for production and post production.

Photomedia and Artistic Practice

This is obviously a photography course, and as the instructor stated 100 times it is an ART course. So the focus of this class is applying artistic techniques, ideas, and practices to Photography. But the cool thing about this class is that it is geared towards the individual, meaning the instructors are going to work with us to figure out how advanced we are with photography and find out what exactly we would like to learn and then cater the experience to fit our individual needs. I chatted with the instructor for about 20 mins after the first class and she seems very nice, and quite knowledgeable so I am fairly excited about this. The only drawback is that it is a digital course, and they do not have a single dark room on campus. I was kind of looking forward to getting back in the darkroom. Someday… someday…

Sex Drugs and Rock N Roll

I am absolutely going to love this class. And I know what your all thinking but really it is going to be a different kind of class, something I have never taken before. It is a lecture and a lab. In the first lecture, we were introduced to our instructor, who used to be in a band, and obviously enjoyed the 60’s he told many stories of his experiences playing music, and meeting bands. He also told us in his half english(england) half australian accent this class is not going to be something you will use for employment or anything like that its about life, its about your passion. We are going to have to do a 10 min presentation on a band of our choice in our tutorial, write a journalistic news article critiquing a band, genre, or song. And for the final we are going to have to write an essay an artist, which a bunch of different criteria. But he also told us that we were into the arts, we could create a song, or a piece of art about the music, multimedia/painting/video/sculpture whatever. So this is going to be a very exciting class, and I am looking forward to learning a lot more about music in general, but more specifically Australian.

Psychology

I am finally taking a Psychology class. I have been wanting to ever since high-school I have just never gotten around to it. I missed the class this week, because I had some scheduling issues. But it is only lecture and meets only once a week. So I am pretty excited about this as well.

All in all it looks like theses should make for an exciting semester here at QUT!
